“TW-Sexual assault, abuse, rape culture…

To all those who don’t think the rape joke was a problem, or rape jokes are a problem.

I get it, you’re a decent guy. I can even believe it. You’ve never raped anybody. You would NEVER rape anybody. You’re upset that all these feminists are trying to accuse you of doing something or connect you to doing something that, as far as you’re concerned, you’ve never done and would never condone.

And they’ve told you about triggers, and PTSD, and how one in six women is a survivor, and you get it. You do. But you can’t let every time someone gets all upset get in the way of you having a good time, right?

So fine. If all those arguments aren’t going anything for you, let me tell you this. And I tell you this because I genuinely believe you mean it when you say you don’t want to hurt anybody, and you don’t see the harm, and that it’s important to you to do your best to be a decent and good person. And I genuinely believe you when you say you would never associate with a rapist and you think rape really is a very bad thing.

Because this is why I refuse to take rape jokes sitting down-

6% of college age men, slightly over 1 in 20, will admit to raping someone in anonymous surveys, as long as the word “rape” isn’t used in the description of the act.

6% of Penny Arcade’s target demographic will admit to actually being rapists when asked.

A lot of people accuse feminists of thinking that all men are rapists. That’s not true. But do you know who think all men are rapists?

Rapists do.

They really do. In psychological study, the profiling, the studies, it comes out again and again.

Virtually all rapists genuinely believe that all men rape, and other men just keep it hushed up better. And more, these people who really are rapists are constantly reaffirmed in their belief about the rest of mankind being rapists like them by things like rape jokes, that dismiss and normalize the idea of rape.

If one in twenty guys is a real and true rapist, and you have any amount of social activity with other guys like yourself, really cool guy, then it is almost a statistical certainty that one time hanging out with friends and their friends, playing Halo with a bunch of guys online, in a WoW guild, or elsewhere, you were talking to a rapist. Not your fault. You can’t tell a rapist apart any better than anyone else can. It’s not like they announce themselves.

But, here’s the thing. It’s very likely that in some of these interactions with these guys, at some point or another someone told a rape joke. You, decent guy that you are, understood that they didn’t mean it, and it was just a joke. And so you laughed.

And, decent guy who would never condone rape, who would step in and stop rape if he saw it, who understands that rape is awful and wrong and bad, when you laughed?

That rapist who was in the group with you, that rapist thought that you were on his side. That rapist knew that you were a rapist like him. And he felt validated, and he felt he was among his comrades.

You. The rapist’s comrade.

And if that doesn’t make you feel sick to your stomach, if that doesn’t make you want to throw up, if that doesn’t disturb you or bother you or make you feel like maybe you should at least consider not participating in that kind of humor anymore…

Well, maybe you aren’t as opposed to rapists as you claim.

Indie Dev Hipsterism

This is a good analogy for the cancerous hipster infection the game industry is now going through. There are now a great many Developers (pretentious, ignorant, art-house pricks) creating indie titles that present themselves as bastions of art-style and design in a modern dystopia of supposed shit when in fact they are pandering directly into the worst of retro nostalgia whilst blatantly copying past design trends of the companies they despise.

Braid and Fez obviously are the worst offenders of this new contagion of hipsterism. Both games bludgeon the player repeatedly with “Hey, hey isn’t this 16 bit appearance so artistic compared to those bland modern polygons? Isn’t this ambient chiptune/classical soundtrack so unique to our indie games? Aren’t you impressed by this game’s sense of class and style?” This might fool a lot of people, but if you were around in the nineties or you see that other games like Bit.Trip and Super Meat Boy are far more inspired because they present themselves as games that acknowledge past influences yet are not consumed entirely by them then the retro-goggles are apparent.

And that brings us to the next problem. Games like Braid and Fez don’t want to actually engage the player with fun gameplay and a unique style. They want to be “admired” for being “different.” This is ironic, because whether the creators acknowledge it or not, their games unfailingly copy the core design principles of platforming’s past. The best they can do beyond that is throw in gimmicks that serve as attempts to disguise this blatant fact. Unlike other Devs like the people behind the Bit.Trip series, Super Meat Boy/ Binding of Isaac, and Cave Story. These games strive to fun great games first and foremost instead of pretentious pieces of programming art.

Finally, for those that defend the likes of Phil Fish…why? Pretty much as a whole, gamers will call out the failings of big companies like EA, Activision, and Capcom when their game design, business practices, and unfounded opinions fall flat on their faces. This is rightfully so as consumers we have an obligation to do so to ensure we get quality for our cash. So why the double standard with indie devs? Is it because they make themselves to be weak, fragile artists suffering under the oppressive weight of corporate beasts? Bullshit. Ultimately they are making something they intend to sell. Our role as consumers interested with buying a good product doesn’t change. This is especially true when these people are neither humble or artists to begin with.

They are hipsters. They are not worth the time.

I agree with this. The visual design of Samus, and Other M in general, was pretty great. It’s the shoddy story, clunky controls, and downgrade in scale and scope of exploration that Other M failed at. I also believe somewhere said that Retro Studios is thinking about doing another Prime game after the next DKC is released.

Also I personally think the new design is better overall. It drops the pointless green neon lights on the legs and the oddly placed shoulder fins for a more practical design. The suit looks functional, fast, and protected with solid armor plating that looks like it can shrug off the worst of blows. It irks me when Sci-Fi Armor/Vehicles/Mechs are lit up with LEDs that comprise glaring flaws in protection.

Plus that mock photo is so bloody close to the redesign that people who are complaining about this need to get their eyes checked. It’s like complaining SSB4 Kirby is is 40 RGB points darker pink than Brawl Kirby. It’s really nothing to complain about at all.

This year at E3 during the Xbox panel during a scripted “trash talk” bit someone made a scripted rape joke (male gamer to girl gamer who sucks at a game: “just wait, it’ll all be over soon.”) and then they acted like it wasn’t a big deal and then they released an expensive, anti-consumer (DRM on physical games) piece of hardware. And then Sony just released the PS4 which is just the PS3 but better graphics and $100 cheaper than the Xbox. So THAT happened.

But then Nintendo just quietly released a bunch of great looking sequels for all of it’s major franchises (Mario, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, and Smash Bros.) and every single one of those games interestingly features playable female characters who haven’t been seen in decades like Dixie Kong and Princess Peach - and Pikmin now has a new female hero.

One of my favorite things about Peach in the new Mario game is that one of the power ups is a literal “cat suit” and Peach’s “cat suit” doesn’t sexualize her at ALL. You can’t even see her boobs. She just looks like she’s wearing over-sized footie pajamas it’s so cute. Also they added a pink letter to the Mario logo just to accommodate Peach’s re-inclusion into the franchise as a character with actual agency!

So at the end of the presentation they tell you to go to the Smash Bros website to find out about new characters. And then they announced this character, Wii Fit Trainer, on the site. And in an interview the director said he gets thousands of requests for almost every video game character under the sun and he’s gotten absolutely zero requests for this character and he put her in the game to be funny and defy fan expectation. This character is literally “hey fuck you we’re the ones making the games around here, and we’ll be goofy and funny if we want to and also check it out another female character in Smash.”

Also the inclusion of the Animal Crossing villager is interesting because Animal Crossing is VERY popular with girls and even though the villager is male I’m 100% certain his alternate costumes will include the girl default villager character. So that’s neat. The three Smash characters they announced were two girl(ish) characters from two girl(ish) games and then Mega Man.

Also in the new Animal Crossing game boys are allowed to cross dress and all of the animals are explicitly genderqueer in the dialog. Characters say stuff like “Boys can ware make up if they want to, I mean, it’s 2013, who cares?” and just today a jock rhino was looking deeply into my eyes and asking me to hike a football and I asked him if he loved me (which was one of the option out of other options about sports) and he was like “Oh I guess a lot can happen when you look into someone else’s eyes like that, huh?” He didn’t even care that we’re both guys. Also in the new Pokemon game you can be black.

Basically what I’m saying is Nintendo is quietly and systematically making their games more socially progressive and Microsoft made a rape joke and then said “what? it was a joke.”
